THE SPIRIT OF GOD

Tuesday 2nd September – Tuesday of week 22 of the year

Reflection: 1 Corinthians 2:10-16

THE SPIRIT OF GOD

“The Spirit probes everything, even the depth of God. Similarly, no one but the Spirit of God knows the secrets of God” (1Corinthians 2: 10-11)

The Holy Spirit communicates to us intimately and personally the life that originates in the Father and is offered to us in the Son. In creation, the Word of God and His Breath (Holy Spirit) are at the origin of the being and life of every creature (Genesis 1:2-3, John 1:1, 14). Hence, through God’s breath man became a partaker in the life of God at creation (Genesis 2:7). Thus, the Holy Spirit sanctifies and animates creation.

After the man’s fall, God sent His son conceived by the Holy Spirit to redeem man. Jesus has given us the Holy Spirit; the Spirit of truth, the Helper, in fulfilment of His promise not to leave us orphans (John 14: 16-17). It is this Holy Spirit who helps us understand the hidden mysteries of God and live our Christian call. The Holy Spirit is God; one with the Father and the Son. He is the giver of life (Ezekiel 37:5-6) and through Him the unity of God’s children which was lost in Babel (Genesis 11) was regained Jerusalem on Pentecost day (Acts 2:7-11).

Dear friends, to fulfil our purpose of knowing God, we need the Spirit of God that knows the depth of God. To understand and comprehend God’s ways, we need the Spirit of understanding and wisdom. To hold firm in times of trial, we need the Comforter, the Consoler and our Helper. We need the Spirit of Counsel and fear of God to make the right choices in life (Isaiah 11). When we are weak and drained of strength, we need the giver of life to renew our dry bones. God is ready to give His Spirit to all who sincerely ask from Him (Luke11:13). Do you seek the presence of the Holy Spirit? Are you open to His leading?

PRAYER: Come Holy Spirit and take possession of my soul and make it completely yours. Amen.

KNOW YOUR FAITH: CCC 687 – No one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now God’s Spirit, who reveals God, makes known to us Christ, his Word, his Living Utterance.
